Finding My Mission After Service: A Veteran’s Journey to Recovery

When I got out of the military I was an absolute mess.  I felt like a burden to everyone around me and my only way to cope with life was using drugs and alcohol.  The consequences continued to pile up to the point where I thought the only way out was suicide.

I owe everything to the support I received after my 2nd DUI.  I had no idea that I could find support, purpose, and overall meaning from the darkest time in my life.

The Hidden Battle for Veterans

Veterans are at a higher risk for substance use disorders than most people realize:

  • 1 in 10 Veterans who receive care from the VA has a substance use disorder.

  • 65% of Veterans in treatment also have PTSD.

  • Veterans are twice as likely to die from an accidental opioid overdose than non-Veterans.

Why So Many Veterans Struggle

The military instills discipline, resilience, and a mindset of pushing through, no matter what. But when service ends, many of us face:

  • Chronic Pain – Old injuries don’t just disappear, and for many, prescription opioids become a slippery slope.

  • PTSD & Trauma – The memories don’t fade overnight, and substances can seem like the only way to cope.

  • Loss of Identity & Purpose – The mission-driven life of service disappears, leaving many of us searching for meaning.

  • Self-Reliance & Stigma – We’re trained to be strong, to handle things on our own. Asking for help feels like weakness—even when it’s the strongest thing we can do.

Finding the Right Team at Pathfinder Care

I know what it feels like to think the only way out is suicide.  Today I work for Pathfinder Solutions;  An organization that cares for and supports people experiencing those exact feelings. We understand that recovery isn’t just about quitting substances—it’s about rebuilding your life, your family, and your purpose.

Here’s what we offer:

  • Flexible Care – We work around your schedule, so you don’t have to put your life on hold.

  • Practical, Evidence-Based Solutions – Therapy, peer support, and holistic approaches that actually work.

  • A New Mission – Recovery isn’t just about staying sober—it’s about finding purpose, reconnecting, and moving forward.

You Don’t Have to Do This Alone

I was lucky. I found a support system that didn’t just see my struggles—they saw my strength. They helped me find my way back, and now, I get to do the same for others.
